Hurricane WatchHurricane from Satellite

A Hurricane Watch is issued when a hurricane may threaten an area within 24 hours. this does not indicate immediate danger, but is an alert to caution residents and emergency forces in the area. When your area is under a Hurricane Watch, continue normal activities, but stay tuned to the radio or television for all Weather Service Advisories.

Hurricane Warning

A Hurricane Warning is issued when it is expected that a Hurricane will strike an area within 24 hours. Flood danger is coastal and inland ares, small-craft warnings, gale warnings and recommended emergency procedures are issued at this time.

Before the Hurricane

Stay away from low-lying beaches or any locations that may be swept by high-tides or storm waves.

Moor all boats securely or move them to a designated safe area. After the boat is moored, leave it and do not return until the wind and waves have subsided.

Store all outdoor items that might blow away - plants, tools, garbage cans and patio furniture.
Fill clean, closed containers such as jugs, bottles, and cooking utensils with enough water to last 5 days. The town's water supply may be contaminated by flooding and damaged by the hurricane.

make sure all cares are fueled. Service stations may be closed for several days after the storm.

Unless an evacuation is ordered, take refuge in a house or a designated shelter that is sturdy and on high ground. Stay there until the storm is over.

Board up windows or protect them with storm shutters or tape. Windows may be broken by wind-driven debris and wind pressure.

Keep a working-flashlight and a stock of fresh batteries handy. The use of candles should be avoided due to the possibility of natural gas leaks.

Be sure to have on hand sufficient non-perishable food to last for several days.

Keep the radio on. A battery-powered radio is a must in case of power failure.

During the Hurricane

Stay inside. Do not leave except for emergencies or in case of evacuation.

Use the telephone only for emergency calls.

Beware of the "eye." After the "eye" passes, the winds rise rapidly to hurricane force and come again from the opposite direction.

After the Hurricane

Stay out of disaster areas. Do not hamper first-aid and rescue work.

Seek necessary medical care at Red Cross disaster stations or hospitals.

Avoid-debris filled streets. Roads may collapse under the weight of the car.

Be on the alert for rising water in streams and rivers, even after the heaviest rain has ended.

Avoid loose or dangling wires and report them immediately to the local power company or the nearest law enforcement office.

Report broken sewer or water mains to the water department.

Check refrigerated foods for spoilage if power has been off.
